A bond to cherish..... Susan D'Silva, Director- Human Resources.

I had the opportunity of meeting Susan D’Silva for the special section “30 workplace philosophies for spreading joy at work from India’s Happiest Workplaces” in my upcoming book “Erupt with Joy” for a brief interview.

Lively atmosphere: It was a cloudy day as I started off for the interview. I was down with a cold and sore throat. As I entered into the reception area, there was a buzz of activities going on. Very quickly one of them signed me up as a visitor and handed over the visitor pass. The other one asked me the details of who I was supposed to meet and noted the time of my interview. I was early by 45 mins, thanks to the not so packed traffic. He made a call to Susan and stated that am a bit early and asked me if she could accommodate me at an earlier schedule which she easily agreed. As she was in a meeting, he asked me to wait for few minutes. As I sat and watched these 3 guys in action, I noted they extended their warmth to each and every call which came to the reception desk. Someone had called up saying they had not attended the interview yesterday. They quickly checked with the concerned person saying that the interview was scheduled yesterday at the same time and connected them across. When I said I wanted to visit the restroom, the access was done even before I could reach the main door. It was indeed a pleasure to watch these guys in action who made me feel so good with their cheerful smiles and worked with so much love and dedication to their role. The warmth and friendly approach at the front office was very infectious and lifted my spirits immediately. I would like to specially mention them as it was indeed an experience by itself and went ahead for the early schedule.

Journey so far with the company: Susan emphasized that her journey has been good so far as she has had the pleasure of working with fantastic people. When Susan started off as a new joinee in the company, she recollected the company going through a challenging time. The company had a fantastic year previously and things went bad in the next quarter. The key challenge that they faced was to keep the work-force motivated through this unstable period. It was indeed very critical. A transparent interactive communication with the juniors and managers was adopted through this lean financial period. The communication between the organization and the employees was also very well maintained. They were made to understand the challenges and their support was sought.

She beautifully equated the organization to a family and the same sense of belonging has been maintained. It definitely helped them to stay connected. The business model operates in such a way that any given point of time 40% of the workforce are deployed to the client’s place as consultants and they come back to the parent company. In spite of not having the day to-day interactions, the scattered workforce is still very much in touch with what is happening in the parent company and the sense of belonging is still very much intact. She added that, this continues to be a part of operations on an ongoing basis. An amazing outcome of open and informal communication was the drop in attrition rate.

Working with a young workforce: A very young workforce with the age gap of managers and consultants being very less works very well with the organization. The degree of connect amongst them is very high and bond better. An insight into the personal lives in the form of sharing through the newsletter is an encouraging factor. As the nature of job involves being travel ready, it is exciting for younger lot who seek out to explore new horizons. Though as of now it is male presence more than the females, who back out because of travel constraints. The lack of emotional maturity in integrating work and life issues in the younger workforce is very evident in the current era than what it was few years ago. Instant gratification prevails high among them.

Susan admits that though she was a late bloomer herself due to her personal commitments was still able to scale up at a much faster pace. Her clarity of her awareness regarding her goals helped her to accomplish what she had set out for herself.

A real inspiration to women starting out late in their career. Watch this space for more pathbreakers. If you would like to be featured in “joyful workplaces” blog, do feel free to write to us. Our editorial team would be happy to get in touch. Write to us joyworkop@hasovan.com
