There is always room for
learning and improvising oneself and performance at work. This applies for a
fresher as well for anyone having years of experience. Few tips that one can
apply to excel at work
Understand Goals of organisation
The foremost thing that one
should be aware of in an organisation is the purpose, vision and mission along with
the goals, products, services and the roadmap to achieve the same. Then
understand how your performance will add value to the goals. Do not be just
limited to your role. Many a time people work for years together without even
knowing where the organisation is heading to. Then one gets stuck at the
bottom. Be aware of the big picture of the organisation. Go the extra mile and
find out the strategies and the organisational movement.
Be
flexible and adaptable
Change is inevitable at the
workplace as strategies keep changing in the workplace due to various factors.
A person who is part of the organisation should understand this dynamism and
should be adaptable to change. This may lead to learning new skills sets. If
one is not willing to adapt to changes at work, it will hamper the person’s
growth and will also affect the organisation. The more easily one adapts to
change, it works in the favour of the company as well as the growth in career. In the process the quality
of work should not get affected. The working environment is always going to
change and the way one works.
Make
Yourself Exceptional
It is easy to point out
what does not work at work. Do not get branded as a person who resists. Be the
person who will say “Lets fix this one”. Every company would always be on the
lookout for people who would be the solution finders. Then one becomes a valued
contributor in the workplace. Always make it a point to
give yourself few seconds to understand and process the thoughts that come
immediately before answering immediately. Frame your answer into a solution.
When this is done as a practice, one will be recognised as a problem solver.
Everyone in the team will start looking upto problem solvers. Create the comfort zone for
the team so that you are the person, the team will approach in times of crisis.
If you are not yet one, learn and practice towards being the approachable
solution finder. There
are times when there will be conflicts in the team, do not hold on to it and
let it not become a barrier and not get in the way of your target. Accept the
challenges and work towards overcoming them with single minded effort.
Identify
Inefficiencies
There are always things in
the workplace that could be done in a better or a more efficient way. Identify
such things and find ways of fixing up these issues. This may be a small issue
however it needs to be fixed. Because small changes will lead to big outcomes.
For example a copier which keeps breaking down every now and then creates
unwanted delays and pressure for persons using it. Having a small alternative
next to it for immediate copies will be a quick fix solution if the bigger
machine cannot be replaced immediately.
Prioritize your work. Keep
asking yourself, “What do I do to make my work easier? Will it really help?
Will it make a difference?” Finding answers and making it viable will help you
get over many inefficiencies at work.
Be Open to Learning
Learning something new everyday will help us do our work better.
It is an integral part of work. Be open to the idea of learning even if you are
the subject matter expert in your team. Never leave a chance of discussing and
brainstorming with co-workers. It helps to open up our minds. There is a
growing need to be innovative and improvise on work. Many a time even
unlearning may be needed to move further. It is very crucial to upgrade skills
to cope up with rapid development in the industry. Experiential learning from
people and skill upgradation gives the edge at work. Keep Evaluating yourself do not wait for others to assess your performance and wait for other’s
feedback. Instead do it yourself and see where you have reached. The approaches
that you need to take to move further towards your goals. Break your goals into
daily, weekly and monthly goals and make it a point to fill out the reports to
track your progress. This way you will become proactive and start finding out
ways to reach your team’s target also. This self-evaluation is a best tool to
evaluate one’s performance. Make sure you are meeting your deadlines and mark
wherever you face challenges and what mode you adopted to overcome that
particular challenge. This will also help you to build trust.
Be
Compassionate
Build a compassionate side
of yourself that will help you to understand co-workers efforts, their traits
and behaviour which help you to excel in your career. This will put you on the
path of achievement to move towards the company’s goals as well as your
personal goals.
