Tips to be Mentally Active at Work



Healthy employees mean healthy business. mental health is as important as physical health and safety. A workplace should be mentally healthy for a person to be mentally active. A workplace will be considered as a Mentally healthy workplaces when workforce look forward to come back to work everyday. Employees and managers are flexible and supportive of each other. Individuals can openly express their needs without any fear. It is the top leadership which is responsible for the development of such workplaces. Business owners need to create a realistic plan and ensure that mentally healthy workplace is also on the agenda of development. Involving employees to share responsibilities will increase their commitment to the business. Everyone in the team has a role in taking care of their own mental health and creating a mentally healthy workplace.

The benefits of a mentally healthy workplace can be seen at a range of levels - individual, organisational, financial and legal. A healthy workplace can improve staff morale and engagement, reduce staff turnover and improve interpersonal relationships among employees, resulting in fewer conflicts and complaints.

Few steps to be taken to remain mentally active.

Avoid Mental Stress
Everyday reaching office on time is a stressful issue to many employees who cannot wake up early. They are consistently late. Do not start the day with “Oh My God, am late again”, you are unnecessarily beating yourself up right from the morning. Check for flexi timings and ensure that you are there in a calm and relaxed state of mind rather than an agitated mind. It is not necessary that you have to do time management and work quality is poor. Focus on the quality of your work deliverables. When the mind is at a relaxed state and not constantly chattering to itself on the inner side, then the building up of stress will not happen. It is very much necessary that each one of us consciously relaxed the mind and ensures that there is no stress building up internally.
Few people confuse laziness and inactivity to building no stress. There is something called as healthy stress which is necessary to take care of performance levels and move towards the goals. Let the stress be healthy so that one is motivated to go ahead and take challenges. Good or Healthy Stress is an important stimulant to achieve the desired target.



Have a Work Buddy
A work buddy is someone who is in your workplace or can be out of your workplace also. A work buddy holds you accountable for your daily activities to reach your timelines and stay focussed in the direction of your goals. You will be responsible for your work buddy’s progress in work. One can have different work buddies for each aspect of growth. These work buddies are one a kind of relievers as one can pour out their challenges without any breach of trust. These work buddies are continuously monitoring and are being monitored. It has been found that work buddies serve as catalysts and over a period of time have helped each other to accomplish goals. Work buddies can be even extended to personal goals like exercising or learning a new skill. This will help one to remain mentally active at work and otherwise also.



Be a Learner Always
Learning a new skill apart from your work or a new hobby always helps to keep one mentally agile. Taking up something new which you have done earlier makes one feel good and gives avenues of improvement. Keep learning, this will ensure that the brain remains sharp. When people learn a new skill, they have significant gains. Learning a new skill strengthens different connections in the brain and challenging activities strengthens the brain network.



Do not compromise on Sleep
Sleep helps us to remain effective throughout the day. Do not underestimate the value of sleep. Few of us can function well with few hours of sleep and some of us need long extended hours of sleep. Observe and know your pattern of sleep and ensure that the body gets the desired amount of sleep. Sleep improves your memory and makes you smarter at work. A good night’s sleep is part of a healthy lifestyle. The brain functions very well with good sleep.



Keep the mind fit
The mind is not a garbage bin or a storehouse to fill all unwanted thoughts and memories. Throw out the junk of the mind to keep it healthy. Meditative practices which are active and helps to unburden the mind can go a long way in keeping the mind healthy and active. This has a great impact on your work performance. Attend sessions which help you to cleanse the mind. It is as much essential as your body.
