A make in India cookie company that
has made its mark in many countries abroad in a short span of time. As I
ventured out to seek out answers for some of the best practices for employee
happiness, the thing that struck me first was the approach-ability to get
connected to the HR manager, Mr. Somaiah. It was a smooth approach to reach out
and after getting the required approvals the date was set for the interview
discussion. On the day of the interview, he had to travel to the factory site
and was unavailable. However, he had made arrangements for the marketing
manager to share her views keeping the schedule on and assured he would be
available for comment.
Approach-ability is one factor which builds the bridge of communication. The more approachable a
person or an organisation is, the easier it is for the team to approach and
have the much needed conversations. Apparently, I needed more information from
the HR perspective and when I called up again,
saying that I needed his perspective too, he agreed and accommodated me at the
shortest notice. I was relieved that we could close it quickly. What actually
made me glad was the first time I called him up to confirm, his first question
was “How are you?”. That put me a lot at ease. I realized that how that
question made me a lot peaceful from within. When I went to the office for the
second time, the reception desk was empty. I was contemplating my next step. A
person from the pantry approached me and enquired who I intended to meet and
passed on the message to HR Manager and informed me that the meeting will take
place shortly. A very appreciative gesture.
Customer perspective:
When I shared with my friend that I was going to Unibic for an interview, she immediately said you mean, the
biscuit company. I was also of the same opinion that UNIBIC is a biscuit
company. When I visited the office the first time, I noticed the reception desk
had a lot of squares in the design which was a bit extruded. I assumed that it
is a biscuit company and hence the designer must have designed the brown
squares to represent the biscuits. When I spoke to Mr. Somaiah, he educated me
saying that UNIBIC is a cookie company and the only one in India which has so
many variants of cookies. He explained that the ingredients that they use are
actual ones in terms of oats, dry fruits and milk. The quality ingredients used
and the recipes make UNIBIC stand out. Seeing my amazed expression, he casually
remarked that we have just added a new customer. I assured him that I will go
and buy a packet, taste it myself and then give my review comments about the
same. This is part of the process of showing a customer the value of your product.
They decide to buy it themselves.
Customer impact: I
actually went to a supermarket and bought the cookie pack. Being
health-conscious, I went in for Honey oatmeal cookies. I opened the pack and
tasted it and offered it to my friend. She liked the cookie. As I was blogging,
with the pack on my table, my choosy teenage niece dropped in and I offered the
cookie to her. She said it was tasty and picked another one. This is a product
of India and now I could sense the pride of the company when it gets good reviews
from outside of India also. A company that has impacted the customer in a very
niche segment of cookies.
