Does culture drive the success of Business?
Yes! A strong work culture is the key to success in business
Culture at workplace begins from the time of inception of
the business idea. The founders set the tone of the culture. At the beginning
emphasis is towards making the business workable, finding the first set of
customers and validating the business idea. The common goal of the founders
along with the initial team members who join them will be towards the
evaluation of solution of the product or service.
After the initial acceptance by the customers and the
solution becomes a payable solution, the aspects of building the business is
initiated. While the strategies are being devised and the organizational goals
are set, it is important to take the steps towards culture building.
Steps towards
building a strong work culture
Working in Unison:
Companies set goals for the organization. To achieve these
goals strategies are designed. Each strategy has a set of team members working
towards it. For example if a financial goal of “X millions” is set for a certain duration . The
number of units of product or service to be delivered to customers is arrived. Then the different teams (operations team,
marketing team, sales team etc) which will work towards achieving this goal has
to be identified. Each team will have its own individual goals to achieve the
financial goal. Focus towards execution of individual team goals should align
to organizational goal. All the people in the organization need to feel the
same connect to give their best every day and work towards the common
objective. That is when the entire organization works in unison.
Sense of belonging
To work in unison, a sense of belonging has to stem from
within in every member of the organization. An environment where the team
members feels valued and respected and express their honest views regarding
suggestions. Listening attentively when the views are expressed by team members
makes them feel inclusive. Recognizing and highlighting the small wins shows
that the value add is being appreciated. The sense of belonging feeling makes
team members happy at the workplace. This can be seen in the performance and
the level of contribution.
Shared Values
Each team member comes with a set of values which are the
personal core values. Every organization has its own set of values called the
company core values. When the personal core values of team members get matched
with the company core values then there is high level of commitment. The
retention of team members is also high as they feel connected. When there is
alignment of values, there is ownership to the vision of the company. These
values of the company speak what the organization stands for. Prospective
customers also look to do business for organizations with strong values as it
would align with their values as well.
Culture is an agreement which is learned and followed by
example. It begins with the founders and
leaders “living the values” on a day-to-day basis and walking the talk. The
existing and new members see the implementation and align automatically. What a
person does speaks more loudly that what a person hears. The culture of respect
builds the culture of trust which leads to collaboration and co-operation
across the business.
Stick to
Implementation
The culture has to be lived everyday by every member in the
organization. Implementing it needs constant communication as it can be easily
overlooked to meet deliverables. Identifying teams or individuals demonstrating
the “live by example” at regular intervals is an inspiring way to build the
culture.
A strong work culture impacts the business successfully and
shapes the individuals who are a part of such organisations. Whenever there are
ongoing changes and challenges for the business, a strong culture helps them to
tide the situations smoothly.
