Sense
of Inclusiveness
Only when there is a feeling of belongingness in the workplace,
then ownership automatically comes. A sense of belonging to the organisation is
a powerful motivator for employees in the workplace. This feeling helps in the
overall growth and development individually and also to the organisation as
well.
Inclusion
refers to a feeling of belongingness. It can be measured to the extent to which
employees feel welcome at work and are valued, respected, accepted and encouraged
to fully participate in the organization.
Every team
member has a uniqueness which is to be highlighted and appreciated. This sets
an environment of comfort for sharing ideas and being authentic to themselves
and to the organisation. This will directly impact the company’s profitability.
It may seem tough to do however it is not so
tough.
Being Transparent
When the organisation does not
discriminate team members and has a fair policy, it builds a open and trusting
environment at work place. This environment must be created intentionally where employees feel they
are belonged and also they can safely express themselves and where specific concerns can be raised with openly and
confidently.
Sometime there has to be a diverse
policy when it comes to assigning work, appraisal based on performance or
during promotion time. At such times the inclusiveness can be strong when the
values are clearly defined and the leaders and the company abide by the values.
When intention is clear, diversity in policies will not create a stir.
When the team members connection to
the values is string and have faith in the company’s decision-making policies
then diversity in policies will not affect them. It has to be implemented in
every role.
Finding the Why?
Every team member on
board has a role which is linked to the purpose of the organisation. When every team member knows
what they do matters to others and how it is connected to what the organization
gives meaning to work. Purposeful work is work that encourages commitment.
When a person works for the sake of working with no real
meaning, it leaves him or her in a depressed state feeling lot of discontent
from within. This discontent will lead to disconnection with the job and
co-workers then they start thinking of quitting. One
should not feel isolated and deserted in the work-place as it is a warning of
an approaching storm threatening the well being of organisations and their
people.
It is very important the top management makes sure the link between what an
employee does and the bigger picture is clear and valued, so that their people
feel a true sense of purpose.
Appreciate small wins
Every small win that is being appreciated and publicized in
the company who went out of their way to get the win has to be highlighted.
This will encourage others also to out and do the extra bit to get appreciated.
Sowing the seed of belonging and nurturing the same is a
powerful tool. When applied in the right way it elevates the nature of work and
the sense of purpose. It also encourages
togetherness where everybody will align for a common cause and strong bonding
occurs in the work they do.
Every voice counts
and every answer from each employee in the form of feedback which goes
unnoticed will radiate towards rising issues in many cases. Developing the art
of Listening
Building Trust
Workplace is that place where many of our needs and wants
are taken care of. After a period of time most of the team’s gratitude towards
the job goes on a lower priority when it is being weighed over other needs.
This connect to the purpose and opportunities through activities in their off
-hours will help to sustain the priorities.
Celebration time with the team spending time together and
encouraging the team members to say a few words about the company’s big picture
will create a bonding of trust in the company. Use thank you gestures and
gratitude will instil the sense of belongingness. Discussing future plans will
help the team members to connect to the bigger purpose and not treat the
workplace as a place to socialize.
