“The journey is as important as the destination”. Achieving the goals
is important, the journey towards the goals is always laced with challenges and
obstacles. learn to enjoy the
journey by viewing challenges as a natural occurrence and not as a reason to
give up. Start to fuel the fun and moving towards the unknown journey with
curiosity and wonder of a child. Every missed step is the next stepping stone.
Do not cry over missed opportunity, take the lesson and move forwards.
Journey as a team player
When you join a team, it is like you are meeting a new family. First and
foremost start the journey with gratitude that you were bestowed an opportunity
to join a team in an organisation. Keep in mind that you are joining the team
and the team has already few members who have certain team dynamics and
harmony. In the first few days, observe the team behaviour and see how well you
can become a part of it. Do not expect the team to function as per your ideas
and thinking.
The workplace is a place of learning, earning and building healthy
relationships to achieve a common goal. As the goal is common and all of them
are moving towards the goal, make the journey interesting, exciting, peaceful
and enjoyable. There is no need to be serious. Be sincere in your approach.
After a point of time, money ceases to excite as most people come to work not
just because they need a job, they really want to work. The workforce today
looks at satisfaction and contribution to make a difference to the world beyond
money. When one gets the feeling that their role is contributing to the world,
that is when the feeling of accountability develops.
It is important that one starts enjoying each step of work. Right from the first day of work, a love
relationship builds which has to be nurtured. The office, people, workstation
may look very attractive in the beginning. Over a period of time all these
slowly will start wearing off. One will get to see the other shades which may
not be as brighter as it looked initially. That should not stop one from
growing professionally. The commitment that you give yourself at the beginning
to learn new skills and look at every issue as an opportunity to grow will help
you to love your job.
Do not get so busy creating the future that you forget to enjoy the
present. Every win is a win, however small or big it might be. Even if you have
moved one step towards your goals and are aligned in that direction it is still
a major win. Do not forget to celebrate today. This today will not come back
tomorrow.
Stop trying to change people
When we
are trying to change a person as per our requirement to fulfill our needs, we
are committing more harm than good. Though
some changes might be good for them we cannot force it down on others. We are
trying to make ourselves happy and not them. The situation will go more worse
if they get all the more angry than happy. Grown-ups take a lot of time to
change their ways. Look at the positive qualities or any quality that you
admire in your team members and appreciate them for the same. Put yourself in
their shoes and understand what is making them to behave in that particular way
which you are not approving of. This will lead to a more empathetic approach
and you will be more at peace with yourself irrespective of the other person
changing his behaviour or not. In the process you will have a new perspective
which will enable you to remain focussed towards your goals.
Agree to Disagree at workplace
Differences erupt in the workplace as most team-members want their point
of view to be accepted. Whenever there is a clash of points, agree to go by the
other person’s point of view and see where it leads. Do not take to heart that
your view was not being accepted. Do not become emotional about it. State that
you agree to disagree on that note and would like to move forward and not get
stuck at that particular stage only. Tell the team that you are understanding
their point of view as well. However, you are feeling quite strong on few
particular situations. Do not take it personally if they disagree as well.
Suggest a plan to go by everyone’s agreement and work around the plan and stick
to the plan.
Associate with people who share your common values
When value matching happens with
team members, it is a true joy to work as differences will be looked as a
different perspective. The alignment comes from an inner depth and brings joy
to the journey. It is a joyful exchange among team members to be on a such a
group. One will start looking forward to any challenge in the team as each
issue resolved becomes a milestone in the journey of reaching the destination
or the desired goal.
