Dependability is a quality of being trustworthy and being
reliable. Every organisation seeks dependability in their work-force. A
dependable person means what he says and can be counted upon. Dependability as
a quality is visible in a select few people who go above and beyond every
single day. This is a work ethic which is highly valuable in a person. When you
come across such persons in your company do not let-go of them. They are the
building blocks and the pillar of strength. When there are few dependable
employees in the organisation, the morale of the team goes up and the
productivity levels are also high. They are the role models and set such a
positive example to others in the team.
Dependable employees are very important for any
organisation. When the company is still in the growing stage and is a small
enterprise the behaviour of the employees has a tremendous impact as compared
to large organisations. A reliable employee’s attitude and behaviour at work is
inspiring and at the same time infectious. It is very difficult to manage every
small detail of an employee’s day at work. With dependable employees, employers
can focus on other aspects of research and development rather than firefighting
as there is a high degree of trust within the existing team. Few
characteristics that one can work upon to become a dependable person and
thereby an asset
Rightfully Ambitious
When the right ambition in place, dependable employees start seeking out
opportunities and won't just stand around waiting for something to happen. They
start discussing the available ideas of path leading towards growth and they
even have a suggestion list on improving the way work is being carried out.
This ambition displays as a leadership quality. These ambitious team players
are the ones who go places within the organisation. Such employees are the ones
who usually stay put in the company with a longer tenure.
Owning Responsibility
A dependable employee usually
owns up responsibility and needs less or no supervision at all. With most of
the routine processes becoming automated, management will require such
employees who are capable of managing themselves and also motivate others to do
the same. Over a period of time such employees are the ones who can easily have
a raise in their pay scale. When the responsible ownership is consistent with
the employee, it only increases his value to the company.
Being Trustworthy
Building trust is a very vital to building a long career. Trust building
does not matter in a few weeks time. It is being consistently honest and
transparent at work. This lays a solid foundation. Trustworthy employees are
the ones whom one can turn to when things are going well and not going well
too. They know what has to be done and will get the job done and even if they
don’t know what to do, they are able to implement the instructions that are
handed out and stretch themselves in time testing situations. They are just the
kind of employees that one would want in an organisation. Ex: In a ticketing
company, when customers are angry due to some minor faults, the dependable
employees stand as the face of the company and bring the irate customer to a
calmer level and make them understand the situation.
Flexiblity
Dependable employees are always flexible and adapt quickly to emergency
situations. They understand the need of the hour and do not bring up personal
dissatisfaction at times of need. The calling of the company and their values
do not allow them to exhibit their displeasure in public. Dependable employees
always seek out the employers and lay out their bone of contention in the open. Dependable employees start thinking on their feet and even if they are
not skilled in any particular area, they go out of their way and help the
customers to find the best possible solution for the moment. When
organisational changes are being implemented, they do their best to implement
the changes.
This quality of adaptability when inevitable changes take place in
an organisation should not go unrecognised. However employers should not take
undue advantage of this flexible quality. The fine qualities should be
appreciated and should be rewarded from time to time. This would be a great
motivational factor. Transparency should always be maintained from both sides.
The management should also be willing to find alternate ways when it comes to
organisational restructuring and decisions should always be taken based on mass
approvals.
Have High Self-Esteem
When there is high self-esteem among the work-force, the confidence
levels are high and ofthen the performance at work is of a higher and a
different quality. High self-esteem means that the workforce know what their
capabilities and are not scared to push those limits when needed. They will
produce the best quality of work, and won't keep decisions as a guessing game.
The work is usually done faster as well in such cases. High self-esteem often
goes hand-in-hand with ambition and are appreciable positive traits. High
self-esteem is often visible in the way that the workforce dresses, talks and
moves. This type of of confidence is hard to fake. It is easy to tell which
employees have it in spades. Work on these few aspects to become a dependable employee. When you know
from your heart that you are a dependable person you will be one of the most
wanted persons around.
