How to be Proactive at Work



Proactive at work means preparing and planning in advance. Proactive people make things happen and do not wait for things to happen. Proactivity in organizational behaviour is defined as behavior that is anticipatory, change-oriented and self-initiated behaviour. Proactive employees are acting in advance of a future event and do not just react in circumstances. Proactive employees usually don’t need to be told to do something, and require less detailed instructions.

Workforce which is proactive at work are the ones who usually succeed. People who are active in the workplace are the ones who certainly perform better and get noticed very soon. The ones who take initiative are the ones who are capable of handling multiple responsibilities and can maintain the quality of work. The ones who are willing venture and confront more tasks readily are the ones who are productive, avoid downsides and experience a fast track on their professional growth.

Proactive people don’t sit and wait for answers to appear. They start seeking solutions for the challenges which are not only staring in the face but also anticipate the challenges and start finding possible answers in advance.  They don’t wait for someone to hand them with readymade answers and a the right resources, they themselves become resourceful.

Example - Reactive People are – My leg is fractured and in a cast. I cannot do any work with this leg for next 6 weeks . Proactive is, I will rest my leg on the bed and will work with my laptop with breaks in between so that work does not get hampered. Proactive people are constantly on the move, futuristic and make things happen. They are actively engaged and are not passively watching.

Few insights to be a Proactive Thinker and Doer

Developing Foresight
A quality that needs a person to be proactive, one must first develop foresight.
Proactive people do not take chances and do their homework. Thereby they are rarely caught by surprise. Learn to expect challenges in situations. Go into the depth of the process and gain clarity on how things work, look for familiar occurrences, recognize the regular drills, daily rituals and natural series that exist in your frame of work. Nevertheless, do not take things for granted even if it is a regular routine. Visualise and analyse possible future outcomes. Do not rely on what happened in the past and do not expect the same results for the current situation and events. Explore creative ways of finding solutions. Outline multiple scenarios and possibilities. Proactive people are always on their toes.



Be Prepared
Proactive people foresee potential challenges and are prepared with possible solutions to handle the same. They start finding ways to overcome them ahead of time so that they do not turn into inevitable obstacles. This preparation sets the ground to face the unexpected issues head on and one does not go into the zone of helplessness. Expect the unexpected, then there is no room to complain or raise a hue and cry. Instead one starts finding ways of dissolving the same.



Think Long-term
Proactive people always plan for the future. They start focussing on how the long term goals add to the vision of the company. When one is aligned to the vision of the organisation, they are on a mission which will take the step towards the goals of the organisation. They are always fixed at bringing the future to the present. What has to be done each day so that they start moving in the direction of the vision. They go into obtaining the past details, present scenario and future settings. Every decision that they take will be not in random, however focussed on a chain of events which will lead to one final conclusion.

Be Consistent
Proactive people are not idle observers. They actively participate in all events. One has to be involved closely. Proactive people take initiative and should always be a part of the solution.  Proactive people tend to influence others and are influenced by the actions of others.



Action taken
 Proactiveness means taking immediate action. Proactive people do not procrastinate and are willing to take action. Proactive people stand by their decisions, take careful steps and choose an appropriate path and do not react impulsively.



Self Attentiveness
Proactive people identify their strengths and use them effectively. Analyse the skills which you can be put into practice to develop a project. Proactive people carefully analyse the need to improve. The constant improvement is a key to proactive professional.

Decision making capacity
Proactive people make decision making of a professional’s daily activities. A proactive person has lot of clarity when making decisions. Proactive people ensure that they are doing everything right in their power to make right decisions. To start being proactive in the profession which you are in, be it being in a senior leadership role or a business owner, proactiveness is the key ingredient. Your career growth and company’s growth lie importantly in your hands. Always be forward facing when it comes to meeting the targets. Focus on the incomes and outcomes. Plan your day so that each day you are moving towards the goal and are in the direction of your vision.
