Decision making
is choosing an option among two or more alternatives for simpler understanding.
In a wider perspective for businesses and organizations, it involves arriving at
solutions. Every decision that is made will have a consequence. Decisions which
are made while driving to faraway places with no soul in sight, google maps not
working and we come across crossroads with no traffic sign is one of the challenging
decisions on the road. Such decisions can be reversed easily. Of course, we make
decisions every day in our personal lives as well and in the same way, they
often go on to shape our lives.
While a lot of
the decisions we make aren’t difficult one can instinctively decide without
having to think about it, there are often more challenging decisions to be made
in the workplace. Indeed, not taking a decision or postponing it can mean that
you waste a lot of time and cannot be afforded when it comes to work
In business or
in the workplace, decision making is a crucial skill to progress. It doesn’t matter what
industry we are in, we will always use decision making in everyday working
life. For an
effective leader, decision making is a very important skill. During the process
of identifying the right resource for the roles, selecting suppliers or the
strategy chosen to enhance performance or sales lies solely on the decision-maker. During the process of Decision making, the value system of a person or
the organization plays a very important role. Values mean differently to
different people. However, values are a major motivating force that helps in the decision-making process. Values determine our goals and outcomes in our life.
Values and goals are interlined as goals are determined by our values. A few examples of personal values can be like being on time, keeping up their words,
being open and honest, being assertive and not rude and so on. When we meet a
person who is on time, it immediately shows his punctuality and respect for his
time as well as the other person’s time. When values have matched the person making the decision is at ease.
When we know
the process of decision making at the workplace, we can become more efficient in
the workplace, encouraging innovation that leads to new products and
services. Every person in the team feels the energy and motivational boost
when new milestones are achieved.
Here are a few decision making ideas at the workplace:
Shared values
When decisions
are to be made for a team, it is important the values of each member of the
team. When values are shared and there is a commonality in the value system,
then the enthusiasm and power of the group is different as they all agree on
few common areas. Any activity, for example, being on time can be started. If
every person in the team sticks to being on time for a meeting or to a sales
call or delivering the product to the customer on time or understand the
customer grievances on time then the team becomes effective and efficient as
everyone stands by the value of being on time. On the other hand, if the team
feels it is ok to be late, then the same attitude is carried forward and even
the newcomer feels lost and distracted. Working with people who share the same
values is a pleasure.
Our feelings
affect our decision-making process. When it comes to a business environment,
emotions are very dynamic. The decisions which drive a financial gain or a loss
has to be made in a stable environment weighing the pros and cons. Do not be on
a positive high and overlook the risks involved. It is seen that persons who
are stable will not allow their emotions to overrule them. Even though there
are chances of setbacks when it comes to group decision making in a team, it is
still considered as one of the most important aspects of group performance. In
our organization where we doing culture-building we found that, when the entire
sales team decides that product knowledge is important for them to sell the
products, they do take care to attend the trainings and catch up on it when
they miss. However, when the management had decided to impart training and
pushed the group there were always excuses and no show due to emergencies. Group
consent mattered a lot.
Be aware of the tendency to reverse decisions too easily
Do not fall prey to
keep changing decisions every now and then. This de-moralizes the team and few
of them do not even bother to implement the decision as they want for a new
decision. This is the general trend in small and medium businesses. We must
always remember that businesses may be different but our challenges remain the
same. The leader or the business owner has to give sufficient time and explore
the decisions and then only choose to reverse after giving the best shot in
agreement with the team.
