3 Benefits of Cultivating Spirituality at the Workplace



Spirituality has many perspectives and means differently to different people in a very broad sense. Each one of us can define spirituality in a manner that appeals to us. The core underlying thread of spirituality is to be connected in love with self and others. This love and care have to be reflected in actions in our daily life. That is when one truly is spiritual. There is a growing awareness of bringing in spirituality to workplaces as well. Few of the people outrightly reject the concept and some of them over adhere to it with some rituals and practices. It is important to be conscious of what is being defined as spiritual in the workplace. Spirituality is a way of bringing in self-behavior at the workplace. 

Let’s explore a few benefits of bringing in spirituality into the workplace:

Confronting Peacefully
One of the companies which value spirituality had their vision as Holistic Growth. This was displayed in certain areas of their office. During an interview the interviewee shared that she understands what the company stands for just by looking at the line. It was a good observation from the interviewee and also gave her an insight into the company even before she joined the company. When the value of keeping a congenial atmosphere is prevalent in an organization, it becomes interesting to notice that when issues of confrontation arise, teams make it a point to discuss the issues and arrive at solutions amicably. Any decision pertaining to the safety and security of the employees will be made accordingly as the value is ingrained very deeply. The women feel safe to work in an environment where spirituality at work is respected. A better work-ethic exists when care and concern are the top priorities.


Brings in Integrity at Workplace
As individuals and organizations start taking themselves less seriously and have an open mind towards exhibiting care to co-workers, then the roots of the company start to strengthen. It is important that every person in the team looks and cares for the company as its own company. This attitude alone can start bringing in lots of change in the approach towards customers. They start treating and valuing every customer so that the customers need to come back to that organization again for their hospitality and service. The spirit of the entire working force working towards one vision of the company makes it spiritual. Integrity becomes ingrained in their actions. This can be noticed in the small actions of every team member. When an organization values integrity as one of the core values, having the connectedness of spirit makes a whole lot of difference.



Less Stress at Work
Usually, the traditional approach is to bring in a change in the behavior of teams working from the outside and moving towards the inner. With workplace spiritual companies, the approach starts from working on the inside so that there is a reflection on the outside work. This kind of teamwork reveals in creating a spirit of well-being which helps in the creative thinking of the teams. The productivity of the team also improves as less stress prevails at work. The team takes it as their responsibility without being given repeated reminders to complete tasks and thereby sets an example of congeniality. Individually also the team members grow. The organizations benefit when one of the goals is to allow spirit to enter into the workplace and is reflected in profits and productivity. Growth is a win-win-win outcome for individuals, organizations, and society. When the team starts to look at the inner life, the responsibility of bringing in meaningful work to the community at whole predominates. 

An environment of joy slowly spreads as co-workers start sharing success and make it a point to collaborate with each other instead of competing with each other. When individual functioning improves, the group functioning also improves and they become a role model for other organizations as well. It is important that the top leaders in the organization embrace the spiritual approach towards work and life. Only when there is a display of this behavior at the top, the newly joined ones and the existing ones also start aligning themselves in the process gradually. It requires a lot of time and patience to bring in the sanctity at workplaces. Nurturing it should be the responsibility of every working member of the organization. 

Organizations are now looking and working towards the spiritual quotient of the teams. Spiritual intelligence definitely helps in thinking out of the box and also to let go of the unchangeable situations and look ahead with positivity and bring in totality at the workplace.
