To be respected is a greater
compliment than to be loved – this saying speaks volumes when it comes to relationships at
work-life. Respect is very important at the workplace.
To have a happy and healthy workplace, people at work to be
respected irrespective of their designations. Few things to bear in mind and
put the same into practice will improve the workplace atmosphere to a very
large extent.
1. Be polite
Always be polite to people at work irrespective of situation or circumstances.
Do not come across as mean or rude to people around you even though co-workers
are not being nice to you. Let it not bother you or your work. Be nice, there
is no need to lower your standards. This is one of the ways to earn respect
from the heart in the long run. This will make you approachable when working in
teams. When you learn to let-go of other’s indifferent behaviour, it will
definitely bring a huge difference to you. This will help you to combat
stressful situations in a conducive way.
The best way to let-go is to think that the other person is
undergoing some severe stress which is turning out in the form of impolite
behaviour. So let me be compassionate towards that person and be polite. That
way am not burdening him or her and myself as well which is equally important.
2. Never judge people
Judging people at work can never lead to something positive. When
we start judging others, we are not giving them an opportunity to know us and
neither are we going to understand them. We already have pre-conceived notions
about them.
This will lead to lot of distress from within and wreck our
internal peace. This will lead to make us angry and aggravated from within and
will ruin the workplace environment. We will make ourselves miserable and start
hating the workplace and work.
3. Listen and not hear
When
communicating with any one, pay full attention to what is being said. Do not
fiddle with the mobile or laptop or keep looking here and there. When you are
fully engaged in the conversation, your body language also shows that you care
for the person. This shows that you are listening and not merely hearing. This
shows huge respect. Always ask clarifying questions as this will make the other
person feel that you are paying attention.
When you are
listening, wait for the person to complete what they are saying. Do not keep
interrupting every now and then or give suggestions without even listening
completely. Be willing to compromise and work together to reach a solution that
works for as many people as possible.
4. Help others
Helping people around you is a wonderful way to communicate with them
and to learn about them. This is a way of showing respect through your helping
nature. Never discriminate people or put them down. Do not hesitate to help
whenever you can a chance to help.
At workplaces, make some free time and extend a help hand whenever
it is possible. This will make you approachable and creates a good working
environment. By alleviating someone’s burden, you will start feeling good
within yourself and you would have earned a friend and huge respect.
5. Encourage and Inspire Others
A little
encouragement at work every now and then brings lot of inspired changes for
people at work. When you express this at meetings in the office, the way people
look and feel about themselves changes. This will bring about changes at work
in a very positive manner and also about themselves. This attitude of
encouragement and appreciation will start building trust, care and love
genuinely at work. There will be lot of respect welling up from inside with
such small appreciation and concern.
Do not spend time worrying about how to gain respect at work all the
time. Always work on doing your work well to the best of your abilities. This
will make you stand out at work. You will be looked up as someone who is
dependable when you make it a point to stick to being on time for appointments.
This kind of self-discipline will also help you to achieve all your targets and
finish projects on time.
Respect
at work automatically boosts productivity. The approach is quite simple. When
people work with one another peacefully, they don’t have the time to focus on
other shallow and petty things
People
will be more interested in finishing their assignments and boosting the levels
of productivity at work. Nobody will be worried about what the other person is thinking.
The goal will be to the company itself and that will definitely help the
company improve significantly over time.
