Be an Example
Don’t take yourself too seriously be capable of
laughing at your own mistakes without taking yourself too seriously at all
times. This will encourage your team members to be able to open up and be more creative,
innovative, and risk-taking with their performance, and improve productivity at
the workplace.
Having a sense of humour is about maintaining the
proper perspective, regardless of the situation.
Humour and Work Relationships
Who doesn’t like to work with someone who makes them laugh? If you’re
going to spend eight hours or more per day at work, you don’t want it to feel
like a prison. In moderation, telling a joke or sending a comedic reaction is a
great way to make a friend at work and generally create a positive
image for your-self.
People who use humour tend to be more approachable. So, being open,
funny, you can help your team view you in a positive light.
How Laughter Helps Work Performance
Laughing or finding anything
humorous is actually a strong stress reliever, If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the
day’s tasks, sending out some funny pictures or your favourite humorous video
can brighten the mood of the entire office.
Once you’re done watching that funny video and are getting back to work,
not only are you feeling stress relief, but you will also be more
productive. With an upbeat atmosphere in the office, there is a higher
probability that you will brainstorm innovative ideas and think further outside
the box.
One might think being viewed as a humorous person would mean not being
taken as seriously in the workplace, but those who told jokes were seen as more
confident. Being humorous should be refreshing to others and not as a person
who views everything in a negative way so psychologically, people view the
office comedian as a funny person and someone very sure of themselves. They are
often more likely to be chosen for a leadership position.
Benefits of Humour in
the Workplace
The positive atmosphere that humour brings into the office doesn't only
help your personal work and performance, it improves overall company morale. If
everyone in the office is having fun and feels like they are connecting with
one another, work is more likely to be completed with passion, enthusiasm, and
a better work ethic in general.
Trust, is one way to display and hopefully earn trust is for co-workers
to reveal their sense of humour and show what they are really like under their
professional mask. Humour is a great starter in the appropriate situations and
can tear down walls between co-workers. Solid work relationships are integral
for success.
Humour is a great opener and can cut through tension in certain
situations. Since humour is the key in creative thinking, and can help
problem-solving skills in times of conflict, of course it can help you in
business situations when appropriate. Using innovative ways to solve problems
can help any leader in any kind of business or organization. Humour should
always be in the positive side so it doesn’t offend anyone and it will not be
risky to be humorous at times, when a meeting seems to be headed in a stressful
direction or if there is a long discussion going on or whether team members are
trying to solve a problem at that time it may be relevant to crack a joke.
Many people assume you can’t work and play at the same
time, but that’s far from the truth. Humour can actually increase effective
communication. Certain sequences of humour in conversation, like laughter after
hearing a joke, were able to predict other types of conversation and even work
performance in a team overall. People in workplaces who are humorous and laugh
together in situations also were more supportive with each other and offered
more constructive suggestions to one-another, of course that improves overall
performance for the company.
Laughter as a Tool
Humour is a key which unlocks many positive things, which
in return becomes a great asset to the company and uplifts all the workers to
be united and brings in the desired change in the workplace.
While some bosses may be concerned about showing their
lighter side to an employee, the ability to smile or have some fun is a
valuable asset in the workplace.
“The old adage is that people do not leave a company but
rather leave a boss. “Humour,
appropriately used, diffuses stressful situations, gets people energised, smiling
and creates a positive buzz.”
Your good temperament and ability to maintain cheerfulness
in the workplace will make people want to work for you. They’ll also be more
confident coming to you when they need help and in times of crisis. In
addition, you’ll be more likely to establish your company as an attractive
employer and boost retention.
